The Macon YDC opened in 1970 as the only female juvenile YDC in Georgia. The campus currently serves youth in the long-term program who are assessed as having low-to high public risk levels and youth in the short-term program for up to 30 days.
The specialized programs the facility provides are: an orientation and diagnostic process where students admitted to the campus undergo a three-day period of orientation, screening, assessment and evaluation; a behavior management unit that consists of a leveled system that focuses on development of self control, practicing good decision making skills and reintegration into general population; and a mental health unit that provides the highest level of residential healthcare available to the girls in the DJJ system. The clinical program in the mental health unit consists of individual therapy, group therapy, art therapy and weekly psychiatric follow up. The mental health unit is also the home of the Butterfly Group, an intensive three month therapy group for victims of sexual abuse.
The campus also provides education, individual guidance and counseling, medical services, vocational services, and recreation. Vocational programming includes cosmetology, keyboarding and computer skills and consumer home economics.
Directions from Atlanta:
Take I-75 South to Macon then travel I-16 East towards Savannah. Take Exit 2 (Coliseum Exit) and at the end of the exit ramp turn left at the traffic light. Go under the interstate and at the second traffic light take a right onto Emery Highway. Continue on Emery Highway for approximately 4 miles until you approach a 4-way stop. Emery Highway changes to Riggins Mill Road. Go straight through the intersection and after about 1 mile, look closely for a small sign on the right that points toward the YDC and then turn left into the entrance. Follow the entrance road and bear to the right. The RYDC is on the right and once you past it, the YDC will be a little further up on the left.
